Technology is most successful when it doesn't feel like technology at all: Insights from Lumo BodyTech

Monisha Perkash, CEO of Lumo BodyTech, answers several industry questions for the 2016 CONNECTIONS Summit at CES:

What is the most important next step to engage consumers in smart home solutions, connected entertainment services, and/or value-added services like tech support and connected health?

Engaging consumers requires providing enduring value, and this means delivering solutions that are necessities rather than novelties. Connected health solutions are successful when they combine great design and data science to provide actionable feedback and personalized insights that can promote better health and safety.

What is the biggest challenge your company faces in 2016?

It’s exciting to see how many established companies are interested in integrating IoT because Lumo’s next phase of growth involves working with partners in apparel, fitness, and health to expand our motion-tracking technology platform. While this strategy offers the ability to scale Lumo’s technologies, there can be alignment challenges between startups and large companies. In some ways, we speak different languages, and learning how to translate is key.

What is the biggest driver for the connected consumer market?

Through smart sensors and data science we are able to understand our bodies and environment in ways previously not possible and therefore can provide meaningful, actionable insights so that we can improve our health and quality of life.

What are the most important initiatives your company is taking in 2016?

We’re making our motion-tracking platform available to apparel, fitness, and health companies.

Describe your vision for the smart home and entertainment markets in 2020.

I believe technology is most successful when it doesn’t feel like technology at all; technology should be invisible, seamlessly integrate into our lives (and our clothes, chairs, refrigerators, cars, and practically everything we use) and provide enduring value for consumers.

Monisha Perkash spoke on the session "Wearables: Healthcare, IoT, and Smart Home Use Cases" on January 6 at 10:30am. Other speakers on the panel included Honeywell Life Care Solutions, IFTTT, Independa, Intel-GE Care Innovations, and Qualcom..
