76% of US consumers very concerned about connected device security and privacy

According to Parks Associates research, the average U.S. consumer owns just over seven connected devices, and nearly one in five owns a smart home device. As consumers acquire more connected devices for their homes, the more exposure they feel, either through experience or from hearing about high-profile security breaches in the media. 76% of U.S. broadband households report they are "very concerned" about their data's privacy and security when using these devices.

Other Parks Associates research shows:

  • 43% of U.S. broadband households intend to purchase a smart home device this year.
  • Smart home device ownership is at 30% among U.S. broadband households with a head of household ages 25-34.
  • Over a quarter of U.S. broadband households with children own at least one smart home device.

In January, Parks Associates will host the annual CONNECTIONS Summit at CES, where senior executives from the world's largest and most innovative companies will speak on the growing Internet of Things, connected entertainment, and the smart home. The session "Personalization and Big Data: Securing Consumer Privacy" will specifically address strategies to help balance consumer concern with connected solutions.
