Facebook Messenger is Top Messaging App for Smartphones

In a recent article for AllFacebook, the unofficial blog for Facebook news and insight, Parks Associates research revealed that Facebook Messenger is the most-used messaging app among smartphone users in the U.S. The firm's Q3 2014 mobile research indicates that 53% of messaging app users use Facebook's messaging app.

The statistic may be surprising, considering reports of user unease over security concerns and data collection. However, the company requires users to download the Messenger app in order to access any direct messages or chat conversations once housed in the main Facebook smartphone app.

The report, The Post-SMS War for Mobile Communications: Messaging Apps, also showed that Skype is the second-most preferred messaging app, followed by SnapChat, iMessage, and Yahoo Messenger.

Other report highlights include:

  • Smartphone penetration has exceed 75% of U.S. broadband households.
  • Global OTT messaging volume will grow from 10 trillion messages in 2013 to nearly 67 trillion messages in 2018.
  • Global text messaging volume will decline from nearly 9 trillion messages in 2013 to just over 6.7 trillion messages in 2018.
  • At the beginning of 2014, 34% of U.S. smartphone owners used a messaging app on a monthly basis.
