Verizon VP of Corporate Strategy to keynote Parks Associates' 19th annual CONNECTIONS™ Conference

Executive Conference addresses the impact of mobility on connected entertainment and smart home

Parks Associates today announced Verizon Vice President Farooq Muzaffar will discuss the critical role of mobile technology in driving consumer adoption of smart home and connected entertainment solutions during the opening keynote at CONNECTIONS™, May 19 at 10:45 a.m. The research firm shows that smartphone adoption has reached 78% of U.S. broadband households, exceeding desktop adoption and underscoring the dramatic shift to mobile devices that has occurred over the last five years.

The 19th-annual CONNECTIONS™: The Premier Connected Home Conference, May 19-21 in San Francisco, will bring together over 500 industry leaders to address the connected consumer ecosystem and the Internet of Things, including connected entertainment and smart home products and services.

“Smartphone adoption increased from 36% to 78% the last few years, and desktop adoption declined from 90% to 69%,” said John Barrett, Director, Consumer Analytics, Parks Associates. “The transition from fixed to mobile devices is entering a new phase, where mobile devices are becoming the main consumer interface for the connected home, and at CONNECTIONS™, we will address the impact of mobility on the connected consumer.”

Mr. Muzaffar, Verizon’s Vice President of Corporate Strategy and Development, will present the keynote “Taking a Mobile-First Approach to the Smart Home” on the first day of CONNECTIONS™. Parks Associates research highlights the important role of the smartphone for accessing content and controlling connected devices in the home:

  • App users regularly use nearly 8 apps on their smartphone and nearly 7 apps on their tablet.
  • 19% of smartphone owners and 20% of tablet owners find a master health app that aggregates data from all health apps very appealing.
  • Over 60% of smartphone and tablet owners regularly use gaming apps on these devices; 54% of smartphone owners regularly use music apps on their phone, but music app usage drops to 39% among tablet owners.
  • 10% of U.S. broadband households have a smart energy device, which they can monitor or control via a smartphone or tablet, and 30-40% of these households use these smart devices on a daily basis.

“Growing ownership of smart mobile devices and rising usage of mobile apps not only change the way consumers live and work but also re-invigorate business processes and rewrite customer and partner relationships,” said Harry Wang, Director, Health & Mobile Product Research, Parks Associates. “Application programming interfaces (APIs) have emerged as key building blocks in driving business innovations in the mobile industry.”
