23% of smartphone owners also own a smart home device

SmartThings to keynote 20th-annual CONNECTIONS™ Connected Home Conference

New Parks Associates research shows that 23% of U.S. smartphone owners also own a smart home device and over three-fourths of those consumers use their smartphone, tablet, or PC to control their smart home devices at least once per month. The international research firm will host the 20th-annual CONNECTIONS™: The Premier Connected Home Conference on May 24-26 at the Hyatt San Francisco Airport, which will feature Robert Parker, SVP of Engineering, SmartThings, as keynote speaker on Wednesday, May 25.

“Purchase intentions for smart home devices among U.S. broadband households more than doubled in less than two years, going from 21% in early 2014 to nearly 50% at the end of 2015,” said Stuart Sikes, President, Parks Associates. “Safety and security are the main drivers for consumer interest, and we see, once smart home products are in the home, consumers quickly develop habits with these devices. Usage varies based on device, but among owners of most safety and security devices, 40-50% control or monitor these products on a daily basis. SmartThings will offer key insights to the CONNECTIONS™ audience on steps to continue driving smart home adoption and offering unique consumer experiences in the expanding IoT ecosystems.”

Smart Home Device Purchase Intentions

Robert Parker of SmartThings will deliver the keynote “Driving Mass-Market Adoption of the Smart Home” on May 25 at 5 p.m. Parker will discuss best practices and strategies to expand the smart home market, including ways to drive consumer usage once these solutions are in the home.

“Age and income are key demographics in the current early adopter market,” Sikes said. “Mass-market advertising with a clear call-to-action, prompt installation, and service delivery will help speed up the market adoption rate of smart devices.”

CONNECTIONS™ features multiple sessions and speakers addressing the role that safety, security, and support services play in driving smart home purchases and usage.
