Sixty-five percent of U.S. broadband households with a security system plan to buy a smart home device in the next 12 months

Analysts and Industry Leaders Will Discuss IoT and Smart Home Business Models at 20th-annual CONNECTIONS™ Connected Home Conference

Parks Associates released consumer research today showing 65% of U.S. broadband households with a security system plan to buy a smart home device in the next 12 months. Parks Associates will address the dynamics of the smart home and home security markets in multiple sessions at the 20th-annual CONNECTIONS™: The Premier Connected Home Conference.

The three-day event will be held May 24-26 at the Hyatt Regency San Francisco Airport, with keynotes delivered by executives from Amazon, Comcast Cable, and Vivint Smart Home. The event features consumer research and market strategies for the consumer IoT, including the smart home, entertainment and CE, tech support, and mobile and digital content ecosystems.

Smart Home device ownership

“Nearly 20% of U.S. broadband households own at least one smart home device, and over one-half of these device owners also have a security system,” said Stuart Sikes, President, Parks Associates. “Security households, rather than being content with their current system, have a proclivity to add more smart features to their home. Companies need to use this insight to capitalize on the growing demand for connected devices in the home.”

Smart home solutions are available to consumers through multiple sales channels. Parks Associates' Security Dealer Survey: Emerging Trends in Security Systems Sales and Services shows 70% of U.S. security dealers currently install some type of interactive smart home device or system within their residential offerings or plan to do so within the next 12 months. Nearly three-quarters of security dealers offer interactivity with their devices, which can be controlled through smartphones, tablets, and computers. Nearly 40% of installs in 2015 had both system interactivity and enhanced smart home features, an increase from 31% in 2014. Dealer revenues for smart home services are around $14 per month.

The research firm is presenting its smart home and dealer research at ISC West this week, the largest premise security tradeshow in North America, and will discuss the smart home and IoT ecosystems in depth at CONNECTIONS™. Key sessions that address the expansion of the smart home as well as new business models and expanding functionality include “Smart Home Devices: Changing Business Models” and “Security Innovations: Expanding the Smart Home Experience,” both taking place on Wednesday May 25.
