iStreamPlanet’s Mio Babic: OTT Could Be the Future of the Smart Home

Mio Babic, President & CEO at iStreamPlanet, offers insight into how OTT services are the key to the home entertainment market:

What is the most important next step to engage consumers in smart home solutions, connected entertainment services, and/or value-added services like tech support and connected health?

The next step in the transition from traditional television broadcast to connected OTT services is to provide a consistent, high quality viewing experience including access to breadth and depth of content, high quality video playback, interfaces targeted to viewing device, and seamless monetization, whether that’s via advertising, authentication, and/or subscription.

What is the biggest challenge your company faces in 2015?

Our biggest challenge in 2015 will be expanding our operations, service and support to meet the increased demand from international markets as OTT takes off outside of North America.

What is the biggest driver for the connected consumer market?

Rapid device and broadband proliferation continues to drive demand for all video content on all screens at all times.

What are the most important initiatives your company is taking in 2015?

iStreamPlanet is expanding the reach of our Aventus live multiscreen SaaS offering with availability on multiple public clouds including Microsoft’s Azure, Google Cloud Platform and CenturyLink Cloud. Combining IP-based live media processing solutions with the reach of worldwide networks and cloud infrastructure we’re driving down the cost and complexity of launching an OTT service from any corner of the globe.

Describe your vision for the smart home and entertainment markets in 2020.

The trend lines of traditional broadcast television viewing and OTT viewing are set to cross in the near future. Both technology and viewer behavior are rapidly shifting, forcing a big transformation in the media business, but no one is able to yet predict the winning model. This time of change requires the media enterprise to acclimate to new levels of agility in order to rapidly iterate on offerings that meet the demands of the connected consumer.

Mio Babic will be speaking during the session “Explosion of OTT Services” on Tuesday, May 19 at 3:15 PM. Other panel speakers include representatives from Kaltura, Roku, and Verizon Digital Media Services.
