Modern Consumers Are Re-Shaping the Media Landscape by Embracing OTT Services: Insights from NeuLion

Satish Annapureddy, Senior Director of Strategy and Business Development at NeuLion, discusses the changing media landscape and the future of the connected consumer:

What is the most important next step to engage consumers in smart home solutions, connected entertainment services, and/or value-added services like tech support and connected health?

With rising consumer demand for over-the-top (OTT) content, including 4K video, the TV industry must focus on the best ways to bring that next-generation viewing experience to consumers across their connected devices anytime and anywhere. Our NeuLion Digital Platform is a cloud-based suite of technologies that helps OTT and TV Everywhere operators address these challenges by simplifying the end-to-end delivery of live and VoD content.

What is the biggest challenge your company faces in 2015?

Earlier this year, NeuLion acquired DivX®, which has uniquely positioned us as a leading technology provider of video encoding, digital rights management (DRM), and multi-screen playback solutions. One of our key challenges this year is to make all of the markets we serve aware of the NeuLion Digital Platform, which implements support for next-generation standards for streaming such as HEVC, MPEG-DASH, CENC, and CF 2.0, to efficiently deliver the highest quality content possible across all devices. We also envision being the leading supplier of live, 4K streaming at scale.

What is the biggest driver for the connected consumer market?

Today’s modern consumers are re-shaping the media landscape by embracing OTT services, which rival traditional linear TV. We see three trends fueling growth in the connected consumer market — ubiquitous Wi-Fi, the proliferation of smartphones and tablets for consumption and control, and an expanding array of affordable smart home and entertainment services. Bearing this out are the many new direct-to-consumer OTT services that are drawing consumers away from broadcast pay-TV, especially as the capabilities and functionality of screens increase.

What are the most important initiatives your company is taking in 2015?

This year we’re embarking on several key initiatives, most importantly helping our customers respond to consumer demand for high-quality content by powering the next-generation 4K video experience. We also want to continue working closely with our extensive sports rights partners, which include the NBA, NFL, and NHL to help them bring live sports action in 4K to fans around the world, especially those who crave it on the go.

Describe your vision for the smart home and entertainment markets in 2020.

In the year 2020, we envision the NeuLion Digital Platform, coupled with DivX technology, as a key driver in powering live, OTT streaming services with lifelike detail and increased realism — bringing compelling, interactive experiences right to consumers’ fingertips.
