About half of consumers experienced at least one security/privacy issue in the past 12 months.

This webinar features Parks Associates research on consumers’ concerns about data privacy and security and brings industry experts together to address service providers and manufacturers’ responsibility to protect the end-user and strategies to do so effectively.

The number of connected devices has grown from 11.4 devices on average in 2019 to 16 connected devices today – a 42% increase in just three years. The ever-increasing and diversifying array of connected devices and services result in a constantly growing and evolving field of threat vectors and vulnerability. Beyond the threat of bad actors, our always-connected lifestyles result in a more passive, but potentially as harmful, river of data leakage. Applications, connected devices, and voice assistants capture data, feed algorithms, and sometimes share the data with third parties – often without consumers’ full awareness.

As the smart home grows into a more integrated and complicated smart ecosystem, internet and mobile service providers and device manufacturers play critical roles in keeping consumers safe and protecting their privacy as a default. They must be open to third-party testing, transparent about security issues, vigilant about protecting their users’ data, and willing to adapt with a constantly changing and integrated connected landscape. Vulnerability disclosure and management are key to resolving faults that impact the consumer experience and threaten security on an industry and even a national level.

Key Data

  • Three in four broadband households are concerned about their personal data security, with more than half saying they are very concerned. Yet, almost two-thirds of consumers feel it is impossible to keep data completely secure.
  • Those with more smart home devices are more likely to be concerned about data privacy than others.
  • Just 25% of consumers consider themselves “very familiar” with whole-home cybersecurity services available with an advance router.
  • Employers are concerned as more work pushes out of the office and into the home. SMBs’ #1 concern about remote work is the security of employees’ home networks
