Demand for TV Everywhere Widespread in Western Europe

30% of Broadband Homes consider Live Multiscreen Service as a Top TV-Service Feature

Receiving live TV on a mobile phone, tablet, or computer is a popular feature throughout Western Europe, with 30% of broadband households highly interested in these TV Everywhere services, according to Parks Associates’ recent consumer survey Connected Consumer in Europe.

The international research firm found U.K. broadband households the most interested in receiving live TV on an Internet-connected device, with 36% highly positive on this feature. German broadband households showed the lowest interest, with only 24% selecting multiscreen services as a top feature.

Among the Western European nations surveyed, household penetration of connected devices, including connected TVs, game consoles, and Blu-ray players, is 30-40%. Game consoles are the most often connected to the Internet; however, Blu-ray players lead all other CE devices in Internet video viewing, with one-third of owners using these devices to watch online movies or TV shows.

“Multiscreen services are growing in popularity across Western Europe,” said Brett Sappington, Senior Analyst, Parks Associates. “As the number of connected devices in the home increases, consumers want more flexibility when viewing quality video content – movies and TV shows. Operators have noted these trends and are rolling out new multiscreen services to capitalize on their growing popularity.”

Multiscreen TV Service - Western Europe, Consumer Interest

Other value-added services also scored widespread interest in Western European broadband households. Almost 50% want to access DVR-recorded content on an Internet-connected device, and 37% want the ability to receive online video on the TV, led by consumers in France and the U.K.

Connected Consumer in Europe surveyed 10,000 broadband households across France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the U.K., providing a detailed picture of the broadband home in each of these nations. The study examined services received and desired, digital product ownership and purchasing, demand for value-added services, use of digital media, and mobile/convergence habits and usage.
