Most consumers haven't caught IoT fever yet. "New research from Parks Associates indicates that just 36% of US broadband households have one smart home device, a percentage that decreases if all households are tallied," CNET reports.

Amazon has continued to invest in its streaming service and smart devices as competition has begun to heat up. The company is the market leader in global smart-speaker shipments, according to market research firm Canalys, and it is neck-and-neck with Roku in streaming-media-player market share, research firm Parks Associates reported. Roku has grown rapidly in part by offering its own branded operating software for several TV brands.

This is according to a report from the Parks Associates. “Analyst Insight: Consumer Trends in Telecare and Connected Health” surveyed 5,000 broadband connected households.

“The use of electric devices has skyrocketed,” reported Kristen Hanich, senior analyst for Parks Associates.

And health leaders continue to bridge the digital divide among older adults, who have shown incredible growth and familiarity with telehealth during the pandemic, Jennifer Kent with market research firm Parks Associates said at the conference. “What’s even more incredible is that seniors are telling us they’ve had pretty positive experiences,” Kent added.

Parks Associates estimates that 30% (36 million households) of U.S. broadband households live in MDUs, 66% (79.5 million households) live in single-family homes and 4% (4.8 million households) report other kinds of accommodations.

Parks Associates follows the MDU category closely and has observed several interesting insights about this market. First, the research firm shows that 43% of MDU residents owned smart home devices in 2020, compared to 30% in 2019.

In the short term, consumers are more than happy to keep paying for multiple services. According to a report published by Parks Associates in June 2021, 46 percent of US homes with broadband-level Internet connections subscribed to four or more streaming services. This more than doubles last year’s number of 22 percent and dwarfs numbers from years prior. And, looking at more current, household level trends, market research firm Parks Associates forecasts that mobile-only households will decline as fixed broadband networks expand. Compared to just a few years ago, home networks today have never been so full of connected devices. Parks Associates research from 2020 found that U.S. broadband households now have an average of 12 connected devices per home and estimates that number will increase to 20 per home by 2025.
