“Although AT&T starts with a 70% stake in DirecTV, they will likely wind down their investment over time,” said Steve Nason, research director for Addison, Texas-based consulting firm Parks Associates. “For all intents and purposes, AT&T is now out of the pay-TV space.”

The margins between households who subscribe to traditional TV and those opting to cut the cord continue to widen, according to new research from Parks Associates. The number of households adopting streaming services keeps growing, while pay-tv subscriptions continue to fall. This year, 82% of US broadband households subscribe to at least one OTT service, up six points year-over-year, while 58% subscribe to a traditional pay-TV service, down four points year-over-year.
Internet connection has become almost as important as oxygen in today’s world, and people living in apartment buildings would be willing to pay a higher monthly rent if broadband was included. A new survey by Parks Associates finds that 40% of U.S residents who live in multi-dwelling apartments (MDU) are open to bundling internet services with their monthly rent. Home security systems have historically required professional installation, but the rise of smartphone-connected and do-it-yourself products in recent years has expanded the market, according to Jennifer Kent, vice president of research at Parks Associates, a market research firm.
Approximately 34% of U.S. households with broadband access had a home-security system last year, up from 27% five years earlier, according to Parks Associates.
