AT&T and DirectTV: Analyst Comments

by Kaitlin Hawkins | May. 1, 2014

Parks Associates analysts are following the AT&T and DirecTV deal closely. From our 1Q 2014 survey, we have data showing:

  • Just under 1% of broadband households have DirecTV service from AT&T though an old partnership agreement where AT&T offered bundles that included DirecTV.
  • 1% of BB HHs have DirecTV pay-TV service and both mobile phone & broadband service from AT&T.
  • 3% of BB HHs have DirecTV and broadband service from AT&T.
  • 3% of BB HHs have DirecTV and mobile phone service from AT&T.

We also have research showing:

  • Nearly 30% of AT&T pay-TV subscribers are aware of the TV Everywhere services they receive as part of their U-verse pay-TV service, compared to the industry average of 21%

Tom Kerber
, our director of smart home research, said:

"From a home controls perspective, the potential acquisition of DirectTV by AT&T creates several synergies. Last summer, DirectTV acquired Lifeshield, a leader in the self-installed security market. With Lifeshield, DirectTV began to offer its nearly 4 million new customers the option to bundle security with the core DirectTV video products. AT&T on the other hand, chose to develop its own systems, including its own central monitoring stations. While AT&T systems must be installed by AT&T, the Lifeshield product was designed for the DIY market. Synergy opportunities include converting existing Lifeshield customers to AT&T central monitoring, converting 3rd party source products to Lifeshield products, and expanding AT&T’s smart home solution to include a DIY offering."
