Competition Increasing Among Top 10 OTT Video Service Providers

by Parks Associates | Nov. 28, 2016

New Parks Associates research cited by The Washington Post today reveals the competitive landscape among top OTT video service providers.

The IoT research firm recently released an updated Top 10 list of OTT video services, which showed the majority of OTT video consumption is now on Internet-connected TV. The list, which has Netflix maintaining the top spot ahead of Amazon Video, Hulu, MLB.TV, and WWE Network, is ranked by number of paid subscribers, excluding transactional or ad-based services and based upon reported figures and estimates from Parks Associates’ OTT Video Market Tracker.

The firm’s OTT Video Market Tracker uses multiple consumer surveys, network traffic data, and reported OTT video service provider information to determine paid subscriber numbers. The ongoing, monthly service includes an exhaustive analysis of market trends and profiles of the nearly 100 OTT video service providers in the U.S. and Canada, such as Netflix, HBO, YouTube, and Amazon, with updated deliverables throughout the year documenting the following:

  • Service features, including content offered
  • Unique aspects and key service differentiators
  • Penetration and estimated subscribers, reported quarterly
  • Pricing and business models
  • Updates on existing players
  • Profiles and industry implications for new services, including analyst insights

Recent data from the OTT Tracker shows that 58% of U.S. broadband households have used at least one OTT video service in the past 30 days and more than 25% used two or more OTT video services during that time. Parks Associates also notes 59% of U.S. broadband households subscribe to an OTT video service subscription with a monthly fee.
