25% of U.S. broadband households plan to buy a smart video doorbell in 2019

CONNECTIONS™ Summit at CES® to feature sessions on consumer device experiences featuring Chamberlain Group, Control4, F-Secure, NXP, and Silicon Labs

New research from Parks Associates shows 25% of U.S. broadband households plan to buy a smart video doorbell in the next 12 months. The research firm will host its 13th-annual CONNECTIONS™ Summit: Consumer IoT and Smart Home on January 8 at CES® 2019 in Las Vegas, to discuss strategies to drive greater adoption of smart home solutions and improve the user experience with these products. CONNECTIONS™ Summit concludes with a networking reception sponsored by Homematic IP.

CONNECTIONS™ Summit features multiple sessions examining mass-market business strategies, partnership opportunities, the impact of voice on the user experience, and advances in AI and data analytics. CONNECTIONS™ Summit sponsors include Alarm.com, Alula, Asurion, Cirrent, F-Secure, Hive Home, Homematic IP, Inspire, Johnson Controls, Minim, ROC-Connect, and Trusource Labs.

The session Focus on the Experience: Interoperability & Integration, January 8 at 3:15 p.m., addresses innovations driving a personalized and frictionless consumer experience. Speakers:

  • Charlie Kindel, SVP, Products & Services, Control4
  • Sujata Neidig, VP, Marketing, Thread Group; Director, Product Marketing, Microcontrollers & Connectivity, NXP
  • Paul Palmer, Global Director, Business Development, Consumer Business, F-Secure
  • Cory Sorice, VP GM Emerging Business, Chamberlain Group
  • Raoul Wijgergangs, VP, GM, Z-Wave, Silicon Labs

“Adoption of the connected home continues to increase as does the number of smart devices being installed within each home – there are over 40 devices in the average Control4 Smart Home,” said Charlie Kindel, SVP, Products & Services, Control4. “Do-it-yourself might be the first taste a consumer gets of home automation, but a full, integrated experience has more success for adoption, and interoperability is key. At Control4, we prioritize interoperability, and our platform currently works with more than 12,500 third-party products, a number that continues to grow.”

“Industrywide cooperation is at the heart of IoT’s ultimate success, and these extraordinarily complex technical and strategic initiatives are delivering results,” said Sujata Neidig, VP, Marketing, Thread Group; Director, Product Marketing, Microcontrollers & Connectivity, NXP. “As these efforts – which include the Zigbee Alliance and Thread Group’s work to provide a mature, open, and certifiable interoperability language over a low-power IP network – are adopted, consumers’ experience will continue to improve.”

“There are several challenges in driving the uptake of smart home products and services such as interoperability issues, difficult setup, high prices, slow replacement cycle of household devices as well as security and privacy concerns,” said Paul Palmer, Global Director, Business Development, Consumer Business, F-Secure. “Our global consumer survey data shows that 68% of consumers are concerned about security & privacy of IoT devices and 48% of consumers are postponing purchasing of IoT devices due to these concerns.“

“Today’s fragmented smart home experience has put a constraint on end-user adoption,” said Cory Sorice, VP GM Emerging Business, Chamberlain Group. “Finding the right time and cost-saving use cases for homeowners and value-creating opportunities for businesses that serve them is how meaningful growth will occur in the smart home across a number of categories elevating end-user adoption.”

“Silicon Labs is laser-focused on creating a more integrated smart home environment,” said Raoul Wijgergangs, VP IoT Smart Home, Silicon Labs. “Parks Associates’ CONNECTIONS™ Summit at CES is a great targeted forum for sharing our ideas with other industry influencers so we can come together with changes that can benefit the overall business.”
