One-third of broadband households plan to purchase a smart home device in the next 12 months

Smart home executives to discuss channel strategies at CONNECTIONS™: The Premier Connected Home Conference, May 19-21

Parks Associates today announced executives from ADT, Cox, Lowe’s, Reliant, Resolution Products, and Time Warner Cable will participate in a channel strategies session at CONNECTIONS™: The Premier Connected Home Conference, 9:00 a.m. on May 20. Recent smart home data from Parks Associates shows one-third of U.S. broadband households plan to purchase a smart home device over the next 12 months.

“Consumer demand for the smart home is growing, but low awareness and limited familiarity create significant challenges for channel partners looking to drive this market from early adopter to early majority,” said Stuart Sikes, President, Parks Associates. “At CONNECTIONS™, industry leaders will identify the right strategies and partnerships both to communicate the value of the smart home and to guide consumers through the acquisition and setup processes.”

Parks Associates will host the nineteenth-annual CONNECTIONS™: The Premier Connected Home Conference at the Hyatt Regency San Francisco Airport, May 19-21. Tom Kerber, Director, Research, Home Controls & Energy, Parks Associates, will moderate the session “Winning Channel Strategies for Smart Home Services” on Wednesday, May 20. He will lead a discussion on the ability of different channels to overcome barriers and drive the next wave of smart product and service adoption. Speakers include:

  • Kris Bowring, Director of Business and Channel Development, Iris Smart Home Business Unit, New Business, Lowe's
  • Scott Burns, Senior Director of Innovation, Reliant, an NRG Company
  • Kristine Faulkner, VP/GM Home Security & Smart Home, Cox
  • Ryan Petty, Vice President, Product Development & Innovation, ADT Security Services
  • Brian Seemann, President, Resolution Products
  • Chris Williams, Senior Director Product Strategy, Time Warner Cable

“We believe security and peace of mind are the primary factors that will continue to drive consumer adoption of connected home technologies,” said Ryan Petty, Vice President, ADT Product Development & Innovation. “At ADT, we’re concentrated on developing solutions that are both safe and smart, while also educating consumers on the importance of monitored security in reacting to an emergency even if the homeowner is unavailable to see a notification.”

CONNECTIONS will feature keynotes from Comcast, Nest, Samsung, and Verizon. Daniel Herscovici, SVP & GM, Xfinity Home, Comcast Cable, will present the opening keynote on May 20.

Previously released research from Parks Associates finds 27% of smart home equipment owners in U.S. broadband households purchased a kit with multiple devices as their first smart home purchase. The conference’s final session “Investing in the IoT Markets,” Thursday, May 21, analyzes growth opportunities in key sectors, current trends in funding, and desirable investments emerging in the Internet of Things markets.
