What impact will DIY solutions have on the traditional security landscape?
Parks has noted that the penetration of traditional security, or professionally monitored security, has been between 20-25% for most of the last decade. There is a segment in North America that prefers professional monitoring, and we doubt that will change. What has changed, in a very good way for home owners, is that traditional security has successfully added smart home features to their offering including both professional installation and ongoing support. The ability to have a professional help with integrating a smart home is good for the home owner, for a broader array of smart home device makers (like Chamberlain Group) and creates added services opportunities for platform providers.

As smart home device makers begin to move towards offering more safety and security options as part of their offerings, many of them DIY focused, we expect to see the market expand in the services offered to historically unconnected products. Garage door openers, locks and door bells all existed before the latest smart home wave, but now have an ability to provide a broader array of options for monitoring, being notified notification, and access controls. Home owners now have a range of choices from no security services to full pro monitoring services, which will grow awareness for the whole category.

What are the best use case scenarios for voice technologies in the smart home?
At Chamberlain Group, we’re biased in that we think voice control is the logical choice in the car and that securely controlling the garage door opener both at home and away will grow dramatically.
