Easy Access to Content Makes Selling Pay-TV in Europe Difficult

Parks Associates today released new European research that shows broadband households in Spain are more likely to opt out of pay-TV services and fees in favor of local broadcast channels. The firm's research study found nearly one-half of Spanish broadband households receive only local broadcast TV channels, compared to over 60% of British and German broadband households that pay separate monthly fees for pay-TV services.

Glenn Hower, research analyst at Parks Associates, commented that this trend is likely possible because of European consumers' greater access to media content. Parks Associates research shows a majority of Spanish broadband households own Internet-connected CE, and over half have TV-to-PC connections at their disposal. "Given that these connected consumers have easy access to broadcast and Internet content," Hower said, "it is difficult to sell pay-TV services in the highly competitive European markets."
