Grid4C: Smart home can help utilities achieve energy goals

David Meyers, CCO, Grid4C, provided insight on several key industry trends for Parks Associates’ eighth-annual Smart Energy Summit: Engaging the Consumer, which will be held February 20-22 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Austin, Texas:

What are the major barriers impacting consumer adoption of energy related products and services?

Most energy products and services don’t make enough of an impact on consumers’ lives to capture their attention. Rehashing ‘energy engagement’ and incentivizing energy programs (at levels that are rarely meaningful) will continue to have low adoption rates.

What are the biggest opportunities for the smart home industry to work with the utility industry?

Smart home can help the utility industry achieve energy goals without engagement in two ways. (1) automate as much as possible of the journey from identifying an energy savings opportunity to acting upon it, and, (2) engage consumers at a level they care about – their homes, their comfort and their finances (in bigger dollar numbers than energy savings).

What impact will smart products and smart home services have on consumer adoption of energy solutions?

They will enable #1 and #2 in the previous question!

Meyers will speak on the session “Incentivizing the Smart Home: Demand Response and Engagement” on Tuesday, February 21 at 9:00 a.m. Other speakers on the panel include SCE, Gulf Power, Nest Labs, and Reliant/NRG.
