Innovation, Ease of Use and Clear Benefit Tied to a Brand Always Engages Customers: Insights from WSI, the professional division of The Weather Company

Joe Sullivan, Account Manager at WSI, the professional division of The Weather Company, answers several industry questions about issues that are currently affecting the energy management market:

What do you think is the most challenging issue for your company as it relates to the residential energy management market?

Right now it is forward looking analytics that utilize the full capability of our weather data. We provide a lot of data for historical analysis only. Only a handful of companies are using our predictive capabilities.

What are the major challenges that your business must address in 2015?  in 2020?

Not much different than anyone else. Keeping up with the industry's innovation and growing with our client's.

What are the major barriers impacting consumer adoption of energy related products and services?

Ease of use and clear benefit. Nest perfected the ease of use but it is still really difficult discerning exact energy savings without effort. Energy consumption has be delivered in a weather normalized manner. Otherwise YoY savings are difficult to understand.

What are the biggest opportunities for the smart home industry to work with the electricity industry?

Customer engagement. Innovation, ease of use and clear benefit tied to a brand always engages customers. Utilities do not do this well.

What impact do smart products and smart home services have on consumer adoption of energy solutions?

Safety is always number one. Money and comfort come next. If smart energy solutions can be embedded in the same system that provides safety and comfort, you will get better adoption. Nest is doing exactly this.

Joe Sullivan will be speaking on the panel “Energy Efficiency Programs: Strategies to Accelerate Innovation” at 3:00 PM during Smart Energy Summit in Austin, TX, February 17, 2015. He will be joined by other company representatives from Carrier, Itron, and Silver Spring Networks.
