Justice Department to Decide a Winner in the Cable vs. Online Video Battle

The Justice Department is conducting an investigation about whether cable companies can reject competition from online video.

Cable companies provide their consumers with access to television channels and Internet access. With broadband Internet, consumers can choose to watch programs through online video services like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, etc., bypassing the company's traditional bundles of channels.

While having invested billions of dollars into building their networks, some pay-TV companies have shown little inclination to stop packaging television channels and become mere conduits for other companies' data. Some major entertainment companies also have an interest in preserving the current model of television viewing because they want cable companies to take bundles of their channels, rather than picking the most popular ones.
