Leveraging Big Data is Key to Growing Energy Efficiency Programs

by Parks Associates | Feb. 26, 2015

Parks Associates consumer data shows that the Internet of Things is driving radical change in the energy industry—approximately 10% of U.S. broadband households own a smart home device with energy-related functions. Of that 10%, 8% own a smart thermostat and 6% use smart lighting in their home.

Parks Associates and WeatherBug Home by Earth Networks recently partnered together to co-host a complimentary industry webcast addressing how utilities can better leverage the big data and user analytics contained within these IoT devices to drive consumers to adopt energy efficiency programs and promote behavioral change. Executives also discussed the importance of diagnostics and automation in impacting overall savings for both the consumer and the utility.

Research highlights from the webcast included:

  • Consumer familiarity with and preferences for smart home products and services
  • Most appealing smart home use cases for U.S. broadband consumers
  • The importance of interoperability among smart home devices and systems
  • Consumer concerns regarding data privacy within smart home products

Speakers on the webcast included Ameena Ali, Senior VP and GM, and Dave Oberholzer, Director, both from WeatherBug Home. The discussion was moderated by Parks Associates director of research Tom Kerber.
