Only 30% of Energy Meters in the U.S. Have been Upgraded to Smart Meters

by Kaitlin Hawkins | Apr. 29, 2014

Parks Associates home energy management research finds that only 30% of the 160 million meters in the United States have been upgraded to smart meters. This means that a majority of meters have no communications within U.S. broadband households. To complicate the matter further, there are over 10 million load control devices deployed using hundreds of different demand response communication approaches.  No single technology is used by more than 10% of utilities.

As the connected home market continues to grow, utilities will need to utilize connected products to reach new customers. Currently, OEMs, retailers, and smart home system vendors are in competition.

Leveraging the Cloud for Home Energy Management analyzes business strategies for cloud-based solutions in the home energy management market, providing strategies to monetize energy data and opportunities to enhance the traditional utility business model. This report can help utilities and smart home service providers better understand the market demand for technology and devices, as well as how to integrate both into a new business model.
