New research from Parks Associates this week revealed a growing interest in the Internet of Things in Europe. The firm's primary European study, Emerging Power of IoT in Europe, found that early growth in smart home products and services is significant—11% of broadband households in Spain currently report owning a home control system.

Other research highlights from the study include:

• 9% of UK and 5% of German broadband households report owning a home control system.
• 62% of Spanish broadband households are interested in a smart home safety system.
• 34% of UK broadband households are interested in purchasing a smart home package.
• 25% of broadband households in the UK, Germany, and Spain find individual smart home devices “very” appealing.

Most notable among the research firm's findings was the fact that European consumers overwhelmingly prefer interoperable systems and devices over stand-alone solutions. Approximately 75% of broadband households in Spain, Germany, and the U.K. prefer smart home systems that interoperate.
