36% of U.S. broadband households find a home energy system very appealing

IoT research firm to address revenue opportunities for home energy systems at Smart Energy Summit, February 20-22

IoT research leader Parks Associates announced new smart energy research today showing that 36% of U.S. broadband households find a system that manages or monitors their home energy usage very appealing. 360 View: Energy Management, Smart Home, and Utility Programs shows 31% of U.S. broadband households find an energy management system very appealing and 30% find an energy monitoring system very appealing. Smart Energy Summit: Engaging the Consumer, February 20-22 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Austin, Texas, will examine ways energy providers and energy management companies can capitalize on interest in these solutions to create new revenue opportunities.

“Consumer interest in energy systems lags behind actual adoption, and consumer awareness of utility-based energy programs has not increased substantially over many years,” said Tom Kerber, Director, IoT Strategy, Parks Associates. “The smart home creates new opportunities for cross marketing and promotion that have the potential to radically change awareness and participation in energy programs. At Smart Energy Summit, we will explore cross marketing and cross selling of energy solutions and the opportunity for bundled energy services with smart home solution providers.”

Appeal of Home Security and Energy Systems

360 View: Energy Management, Smart Home, and Utility Programs also notes 37% of U.S. broadband households find a security monitoring system very appealing and 35% find a safety monitoring system very appealing. Parks Associates analysts and other industry leaders will discuss strategies to blend smart home and energy services during multiple sessions at Smart Energy Summit.

Energy Providers and IoT: Creating New Revenue Streams,” Tuesday, February 21, at 2 p.m., moderated by Brad Russell, Research Analyst, Parks Associates, explores the viability and revenue potential of new services and consumer interest in adoption of security and smart home services when bundled or associated with energy. The session includes the following speakers:

  • Mark Cosby, Director – Business Development, Westar Energy
  • Cullen Hay, General Manager, U.S. Energy, Direct Energy
  • Jorge Perdomo, Senior Vice President of Corporate Strategy & Development, MivaTek
  • Ingmar Sterzing, VP Power Supply and Energy Services, Pedernales Electric Cooperative

“While consumers are being overwhelmed with a multitude of smart home solutions, energy companies are confronted with the challenge of developing relevant and compelling value propositions or watching from the sidelines as others monetize smart home opportunities,” said Mark Cosby, Director – Business Development, Westar Energy.

“Direct Energy is leading the way in energy innovation for our residential customers because we have a unique approach: We want them to buy less of what we sell. Our offers, products, and services are meant to make a difference in the way our customers use energy,” said Cullen Hay, General Manager, U.S. Energy, Direct Energy.

“The integration of security and smart home services with an energy solution is logical and can be lucrative for all,” said Jorge Perdomo, Senior Vice President of Corporate Strategy & Development for MivaTek. “For energy providers who are already supplying a much-needed product to their customers, having MivaTek’s security and smart home platform service can be a great addition to provide meaningful information around consumption and conservation. The enablement of our smart platform, which provides guidance and control to manage energy, is naturally the next step for a better tomorrow.”

Incentivizing the Smart Home: Energy Efficiency,” Wednesday, February 22, at 4 p.m., moderated by Tom Kerber, examines the current and future roles of smart home service providers in the energy space and strategies to create value for consumers. The following speakers will also discuss the competition to provide energy services as part of comprehensive, whole-home solutions:

  • Siva Ayer, Head of Smart Controls, Carrier
  • Gene Wang, CEO & Co-founder, People Power
  • Jeremy Warren, Chief Technology Officer, Vivint

“While consumers still don’t care much about energy conservation even with modern smartphone-based solutions, they care deeply about their families and loved ones,” said Gene Wang, CEO & Co-founder, People Power. “Our research was confirmed that keeping consumers involved in energy conservation is dependent upon allowing them to simultaneously protect their homes, their families, and loved ones – within the same app experience.”
