Smart Home is Forcing Convergence of Traditionally Separate Industries

by Parks Associates | May. 9, 2019

Today, the smart home is forcing convergence of traditionally separate industries, creating opportunities for partnerships and new ways for consumers to acquire connected solutions in the home. Connectivity enables companies to solve real customer problems using new, more frictionless approaches, and in doing so, opens the door to numerous new business models. Partnerships are often essential to creating new value and monetization strategies. AI is improving user experience(s) that did not exist just a few years ago.

Connected products and ecosystems have taken a variety of approaches to expand value ranging from proprietary platforms, to tightly curated partnerships, to open platforms courting thousands of developers. Increasingly, integrations and partnerships have become integral to value creation. Along with these partnerships come a complex range of issues, including interoperability, data ownership, co-marketing strategies, and anticipating disrupters. Where some of these concerns are straightforward and easy to navigate, others, such as consumer privacy and security can be more delicate discussions when partner priorities differ.
