Smart home services are a new frontier: Insights from Viaccess-Orca

Alain Nochimowski, EVP Innovation at Viaccess-Orca, answers the following industry questions prior to the 2015 CONNECTIONS Europe event taking place 10-11 November in Amsterdam:

What challenges does Europe face with rolling out new smart home & connected entertainment services?

Inventing a sustainable business for connected entertainment services remains a challenge in Europe: a fragmented digital market still impeding the assertion of global ambitions, a cost of piracy increasingly crippling operators’ business models and the looming threat of cord cutting constitute some of the key challenges faced by European players.

The deployment of smart home services (touted by some operators as the promising fifth pillar in a “quintuple play” offering), coupled with new data analytics capabilities, can be viewed as a new frontier. But this also comes with challenges, not the least of which is the threat on data security & customers’ privacy. Operators still have a long way to go to really harness the value of their data, to the benefit of their customers.

What do you see as the biggest challenge facing your company in the next 12 months?

The emergence of internet players as video service provider giants owes a lot to the harnessing of the power of cloud architectures and DevOps methodology. VO is at the forefront of cloud innovation, with the ability to provide its customers with unprecedented levels of agility and flexibility when deploying video services. This will undoubtedly help us fuel our growth for the years to come.

Alain will be speaking at the panel session “Integrating OTT Content with Pay-TV Services” on 11 November at 8:45.
