Verizon Digital Media Services: Consumers Moving Away from Cable Boxes, Towards Mobile Connected Devices

Chris Carey, Chief Product Officer at Verizon Digital Media Services, answers industry questions about current and future connected entertainment services and markets:

What is the most important next step to engage consumers in smart home solutions, connected entertainment services, and/or value-added services like tech support and connected health?

At VDMS, we've worked hard to stay ahead of the forces driving consumers towards connected entertainment services: Mobile and in-home device proliferation, improving bandwidth, both in home and on mobile devices, and personalized viewing experiences. Rolling into 2015, our most important next steps are 1) to engage with video content rights holders like broadcasters and OTT providers to enable more and more connected entertainment services and 2) to make sure those providers are delivering their experiences with the highest quality of experience possible, and 3) to allow publishers to maximize advertising monetization, and maximize the context and relevance of the ads they are delivering to the consumers viewing them.

What is the biggest driver for the connected consumer market?

Broader acceptance of the sale and distribution of content rights outside of the traditional cable/MSO ecosystem is huge for the markets where VDMS competes. The next 24 months will be an interesting time as traditional rights holders explore non-traditional IP distribution methods, with varying degrees of success and failure. Non-traditional rights holders will also benefit as consumer behavior and education is redirected away from the cable box and remote towards phones, tablets, game consoles and other devices.

Chris Carey will be speaking during the “Consumer Demand for Next-Gen TV Services” session at CONNECTIONS™ Summit at CES in Las Vegas, NV, January 6, 2015. Other panel speakers include representatives from BrightLine, Cisco, DivX, Gracenote, and ThinkAnalytics.
