"cord cutting" articles

In a recent article for The Guardian , HBO revealed the scheduled launch of HBO Now, its online streaming-only OTT service, will be April 2015. Apple TV is also reportedly set to be one of the new streaming service's first partners. HBO first announced its plans to launch a streaming-only OTT service in October 2014, sparking intense discussion and analysis throughout the digital media market. Shortly after, Parks Associates research showed that 17% of U.S. broadband...

Since HBO’s late 2014 announcement that they would go direct to consumer, the TV industry has been abuzz. Speculation about the impact of the service has ranged widely, from those who see the service as a valuable tool to reach Millennials to those who see it as the beginning of the end for pay TV as we know it. This speculation was heightened in the past few days. As has been reported in several of the cited articles, a recent Parks Associates survey of 10,000 U.S. broadband...

In a recent article for re/code , Parks Associates research revealed a potential loss of 6.8 million pay-TV subscribers when HBO's web-only subscription video service releases this year. Citing the results of the firm's most recent consumer study , author Peter Kafka  writes "if the people who respond to Parks’ survey actually follow through on their plans, then HBO’s new 'over the top' service will end up costing the pay-TV business around 7 million subscribers....

Game of Thrones, Girls, and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver could be coming to a device near you, whether or not you have a pay-TV subscription. This morning at a Time Warner, Inc. investor meeting, HBO chief executive Richard Plepler announced that the network would launch a standalone over-the-top service as soon as 2015 . The jump would not be drastic from a technology standpoint, as HBO currently delivers content through its HBO GO app. However, a move into the...

Let it not be said that HBO restricts drama to its original series. Today’s announcement that HBO will launch an online video streaming service next year has added a new twist to the pay TV versus OTT plotline. While Mr. Plepler’s statement leaves us with as many questions as it provides answers, here are three things that we can take away from this news. This move shouldn’t be a surprise. Few that follow the industry closely will be surprised by HBO’s announcement....

When I was in college, I was a cord-cutter, just as Parks Associates data suggests. The 18-24 crowd is often prone to subscribing to only Internet and neglecting pay-TV in favor of OTT services such as Netflix and Hulu+. Back then, I sat my desktop next to my entertainment center and did everything on the computer using the TV set as a monitor, not just watching movies. There was a wireless keyboard and mouse on the coffee table, and sometimes on the floor, but none of my friends cared....

Written by Brett L. Sappington, Director of Research Since the dark days of 2009 when the term "cord-cutting" could be heard in nervous whispers around the halls of pay TV providers large and small, the industry has been anxious about the possibility that subscribers might just dump the whole pay TV proposition in favor of online video, Redbox, and other alternatives. Survey and industry data since that time has shown that while a segment of consumers are open to the...

Written by Jim O'Neill, Parks Associates Research Analyst During an earnings call this week, Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes maintained that cord cutting is a myth, challenging someone to show him the numbers. To a point, that’s not very hard to do if you look at the cable TV industry only. Since 2008, cable has lost a whopping 4.5 million subscribers in the U.S. As the second quarter numbers roll in, MSOs are likely to lose another 1.38 million by the end of the year, and that...
