Amazon & Netflix Go Head-to-Head at 2017 Golden Globes

by Alexandra Martin | Jan. 11, 2017

Amazon and Netflix went head-to-head at the 2017 Golden Globes Sunday night, as the OTT video services’ original content was up for several awards.

Original content has become an increased focus for OTT video services. Original content provides streaming services with a less expensive option to accumulate new content compared to acquiring licenses from outside sources. In addition, with over 190 OTT video services in North America, original content can create differentiation among services through the exclusivity of original content. Consumers must subscribe to a certain OTT video service, in order to view the desired content. Golden Globe nominations and awards can increase demand for nominated shows through exposure and acclamations.

The efforts to create original content that resonates with audiences was rewarded as both services, Amazon and Netflix, walked away with 2 awards each. A total of 17 nominations were given to the video streaming services, further placing them as serious contenders in the industry. Amazon won its first Golden Globe in the film category for Manchester by the Sea.
