Smart home device adoption highest among heads of household 25-34, but 35-44 year olds own two different smart devices on average

Samsung, AT&T, Greenwave Systems, MivaTek, Vodafone, and Lutron Electronics to address mass-market smart home adoption at CONNECTIONS™ Summit at CES® 2016

New research from Parks Associates shows U.S. broadband households with a head of household ages 25-34 have the highest adoption rate for smart home devices at nearly 30%. Among heads of household ages 35-44, adoption is only 21%, but they own the highest number of smart home product categories, with an average of two different smart products. Networked security cameras, smart thermostats, and smart door locks are the leading categories of smart home devices.

Parks Associates will bring together industry leaders to examine the smart home and smart device markets at CONNECTIONS™ Summit: Monetizing Smart Home Solutions and Connected Devices. The summit, January 6-7 at CES 2016, includes nine executive sessions and a networking-and-cocktails reception.

“Nearly 40% of U.S. broadband households with a security system also own a smart home product,” said Stuart Sikes, President, Parks Associates. “Safety and security are the leading value propositions for the connected home, so we will see many innovative solutions at CES 2016 coming from partnerships among security companies, service providers, app developers, and device manufacturers. Speakers and analysts at CONNECTIONS™ Summit will discuss the use cases that will appeal to consumers and drive new revenues in the expanding IoT ecosystems.”

Smart Product Adoption shows household income and home size also have a role in smart home adoption. Households with an annual income of $100,000 or more are most likely to have a smart home device, and more than 30% of U.S. broadband households with more than 3,000 square feet own a smart home device.

Sikes will moderate the session “Growth in IoT: Entertainment, Smart Home, Health,” which examines partnerships, business models, and integration challenges critical to mass-market adoption for the connected home. Speakers include:

Eric Canfield, Director, Smart Home, Samsung Electronics America

  • Jim Hunter, Chief Scientist and Technology Evangelist, Greenwave Systems
  • Joe Liu, CEO, MivaTek
  • Andrew Morawski, Head of M2M, Vodafone, Americas, Vodafone
  • Michael Pessina, President, Lutron Electronics
