Over one-fourth of U.S. broadband households with children have smart home devices

Carrier, Comcast, Salus, Verizon, and Vivint to discuss smart home and IoT strategies at CONNECTIONS™ Summit at CES

Parks Associates research finds over one-fourth of U.S. broadband households with children at home own at least one smart home device, far more than the 13% without children that have a smart home device. The research firm will explore the ways consumers acquire and use smart home solutions, including new service opportunities, during the session “IoT: Smart Home Solutions and Value-Added Services” at CONNECTIONS™ Summit at CES. The tenth-annual event takes place January 6-7, 2016, in Las Vegas.

“The smart home opens many new value propositions for families, from security to saving time and money, and service providers and OEMs can create attractive offerings leveraging products already in the home alongside new solutions,” said Stuart Sikes, President, Parks Associates. “One key service offering is in securing the data—over 50% of households planning to purchase a smart home device are willing to pay $9.99 per month for a privacy and support service for these solutions.”

Sikes will moderate the IoT session at 9 a.m. on January 7, with the following speakers:

  • Matt Eyring, Chief Strategy and Innovation Officer, Vivint
  • Daniel Herscovici, SVP & GM, Xfinity Home, Comcast Cable
  • Scott Hublou, VP of Global Connected Solutions, Salus
  • Matthew Pine, Vice President, Marketing, Carrier
  • Ohad Zeira, Director, Consumer IoT, Verizon

The top smart home devices include smart thermostats, light bulbs, door locks, garage door openers, and networked cameras. Parks Associates reports that two-thirds of households planning to purchase a smart home device in the next 12 months feel it is very important for device providers to guarantee that the equipment cannot be hacked. The firm notes that the correlation between smart home product ownership and the presence of children in the home boosts the importance of support security as part of new smart home offerings.

CONNECTIONS™ Summit: IoT, Entertainment, and the Connected Consumer will be held in the Venetian Hotel, Level 4, Room Marcello 4501. Sponsors of CONNECTIONS™ Summit include Cirrent, F-Secure, Affinegy, AirTies, Alarm.com, Carrier, Greenwave Systems, Icontrol Networks, MivaTek, NXP, PlumChoice, ROC-Connect, Support.com, ULE Alliance, Vivint, and WeatherBug Home.
