OTT Programming, Home Security Are Driving the Connected Consumer Market: Insights from Shane Dyer

Shane Dyer, President at Arrayent, addresses several industry issues prior to speaking at CONNECTIONS™ Summit at CES in January:

What is the biggest driver for the connected consumer market?

There will be no single "killer app". Home entertainment (OTT programming) is the number one driver now, followed by traditional monitored home security. Disruptive services (DIY) may someday become important. But for now point solutions rule: Nest Thermostat, Honeywell thermostat, Drop Cam, and Withings Scale have each individually outsold DIY systems like Lowe's IRIS, Staples Connect and Wink.

What are the most important initiatives your company is taking in 2015?

Enabling trusted brands to create a "cloud presence" such that they can create ecosystems that enable them to grow their business. E.g. Chamberlain/Arrayent cloud connects to Alarm.com, Nest and Wink.

Describe your vision for the smart home and entertainment markets in 2020.

Apps as a user interface wither away; apps are only used for device provisioning. Machine learning takes over so that "set and forget" rules the day. Products improve in place. Consumer save money, have more convenience, feel safe without having to think or interact with devices or apps. The power of the cloud dominates.

Shane Dyer will be speaking on the panel “Internet of Things: Expanding Smart Devices” during CONNECTIONS™ Summit at CES in Las Vegas, NV, January 6, 2015. He will be joined by other company representatives from Amdocs, EcoFactor, Ericsson, Greenwave Systems, and WeatherBug Home by Earth Networks.
