Parks Associates to Present Smart-Grid Research at the 2012 Broadband Communities Summit

Research firm presents new consumer research at leading event on Fiber-to-the-Home and Broadband Access Technologies

Parks Associates today announced that Tom Kerber, Director, Research, Home Controls & Energy, will present at the 2012 Broadband Communities Summit in Dallas, Texas, April 24-26. Mr. Kerber will participate in the Smart Grids and the Business Case for Fiber session, part of the event’s Editor’s Choice Track program, on Tuesday, April 24, 10:20 a.m. CST.

Parks Associates' latest consumer research, in Technology Enthusiasts & Adopters of Energy Management, finds 65% of U.S. broadband households, when presented with different value-added services, rate at least one security- or energy-related service as highly appealing, making these offerings important in enhancing service bundles and building provider revenue.

Smart Grids and the Business Case for Fiber will explore the need for FTTH operators to sell services beyond the triple play to recoup the costs of building fiber. Speakers will discuss why electricity distributors need ultra-reliable communications to add intelligence to the grid. Session attendees will find out whether new smart-grid applications, beginning with automated meter reading and extending to demand response, outage detection, and more, are a good fit for FTTH networks. Attendees will also learn from this distinguished panel of FTTH operators, who are pioneering smart-grid services, about the many benefits of using fiber for the smart grid as well as the many challenges involved.

“Attendees will gain an understanding of the business case for installing fiber as part of an AMI deployment, how it compares to other communication options, and how broadband and cable television operators have reacted,” Kerber said.

“We have an outstanding lineup of speakers and activities planned for this year’s Summit, and we are delighted to have Mr. Kerber included on the program,” said Scott DeGarmo, President and CEO, Broadband Communities. “Our extensive three-day agenda boasts five technical track programs, keynote addresses, special events and workshops, and much more!”

The Broadband Communities Summit will be held at the InterContinental Hotel – Dallas in Addison, Texas. Visit http://www.regonline.com/Register/Checkin.aspx?EventID=1013793 to register for the event or http://www.bbcmag.com/2012s/ to learn more.
