80% of U.S. broadband households believe that having an energy-efficient home is important

Parks Associates and PLMA examine growth trajectory for DER and smart home over next several years in industry webcast

Parks Associates research reveals one-third of U.S. broadband households own at least one product that can be controlled with their smartphone, with smart home adoption growing alongside distributed energy resources (DER) such as renewable generation, battery storage, and electric vehicles. Parks Associates and PLMA will co-host the complimentary industry webcast “The Future of DER: Energizing the Smart Home” on Tuesday, June 26, 1 p.m. CT (2 p.m. ET), to examine the opportunities and challenges as smart home and DER industries follow strong growth trajectories over the next several years.

“Eighty percent of households believe that having an energy efficient home is important,” said Tom Kerber, Director, IoT Strategy, Parks Associates. “Smart home solutions are lowering the barriers for consumer participation in energy programs. As adoption of rooftop solar, plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and battery-electric (BEV) vehicles, and energy storage gains momentum, consumers and providers both will look to leverage these solutions with smart home technologies to improve efficiencies, better manage the load, and reduce peak demand. In this webcast, we will examine the complexities and challenges as all these products are introduced into the smart home.”

Importance of Having an Energy Efficient Home | Parks Associates

According to Parks Associates research, 18% of U.S. broadband households own a home automation device. Smart thermostats are the most common device—13% of households own a smart thermostat. The industry webcast will address strategies for energy providers and other smart home and IoT providers to expand business plans as adoption of smart home solutions increases and more of these products impact the grid.

“Connected devices in homes are influencing new profiles of energy production and consumption within an evolving delivery environment,” said PLMA Chair Michael Brown with Berkshire Hathaway NV Energy.  “PLMA has a growing, additional emphasis on the integration of DERs to help energy utilities, solution providers, and trade allies better understand load management challenges to identify practical paths to implementing proven solutions.”

Joining Kerber on the webcast are the following speakers:

  • Richard Barone, Manager, Demand Response, Hawaiian Electric Company, and PLMA Group Co-Chair
  • Michael Brown, Manager, Demand Response & Distributed Energy Resources, NV Energy, and PLMA Chair
  • Tony Koch, Mechanical Engineer, Bonneville Power Administration
  • John Powers, Founder/CEO, Extensible Energy, and PLMA Group Co-Chair

“The increasing breadth of smart products entering the home opens up new possibilities for demand management,” Kerber said.  “Smart products can respond to time-varying tariffs and participate in DR programs, and providers can choreograph their operations to reduce peak demand on a continuous basis.”
