Only 28% of consumers are comfortable selecting a health monitoring device on their own

Parks Associates releases consumer segmentation identifying key connected health consumer categories

Parks Associates announced new connected health research today showing only 28% of consumers in U.S. broadband households are comfortable selecting a health monitoring device on their own. Among the 58% of consumers with at least one chronic condition, only 29% are comfortable selecting a health monitoring device.

Health Tracker: Effective Engagement through Segmentation & Personalization also reports more consumers now feel they need the help of others to improve their health, compared to 2015 and 2016. The research reveals consumer concerns and behaviors regarding their health and highlights how healthcare device makers and service providers can engage specific consumer segments with innovative health solutions.

“Healthcare trails other industries in consumer marketing, and in many cases, the trends are going in the opposite direction desired—for example, consumer confidence in choosing a health monitoring device has been trending downward since 2015,” said Kristen Hanich, Research Analyst, Parks Associates. “But, consumers are also more willing to accept help with their healthcare decisions, so care providers, which are under tremendous pressure to forge more consumer-centric approaches, can expand their engagement efforts through smartphones, apps, and connected health devices.”

The research features trending data regarding healthcare attitudes, behaviors, and IoT adoption among U.S. broadband households, including trending data and segmentation insight and analysis. The firm also released “Market Snapshot - Digital Health & the U.S. Aging Population,” which examines the opportunities for smart home and IoT technologies in fulfilled digital health use cases such as independent living.

“Technology’s role will expand in consumer engagement efforts, but it only augments the consumer-care provider relationship instead of replacing it,” Hanich said. “Understanding what motivates consumers and what prompts actions is just as important as knowledge about the type of technology they use. Care providers will benefit from embedding such technology into their practices and empowering consumers with such tools.”

Health Tracker: Effective Engagement through Segmentation & Personalization presents an overview of the most recent Parks Associates digital health consumer segmentation research. It investigates segments’ perceptions of their health status, their overall health, their level of motivation in improving their health status, and how they prefer to be engaged.

Parks Associates will share some of this new research at the pre-show research workshop, “Connected Health and the Smart Home: Assessing the Crossover Opportunities,” sponsored by iQor, on October 25 in Boston, prior to the start of the Connected Health Conference. The workshop will examine strategies to deliver healthcare innovations through a connected home, featuring consumer research and executive insight, with speakers from AARP, Comcast, GE Lighting, GreatCall, Honeywell, Independa, MivaTek, Nortek, Orbita Health, RedMed, Reemo Health, Reflexion Health, and Select Comfort.
