Schneider Electric: Relatively Low Financial Impact of Energy Efficiency for a Household Impacts Consumer Adoption of Energy Management Solutions

Xavier Datin, SVP Prosumer at Schneider Electric, offers insight into the barriers and opportunities currently impacting energy management:

What do you think is the most challenging issue for your company as it relates to the residential energy management market?

The residential market is rather an opportunity for Schneider Electric to provide energy management tools but also increase comfort in every home thanks to new technology, in particular related to the internet-of-things, embedded in our products and solutions. At the time energy efficiency in the residential market becomes also more and more popular as a source of efficiency for Utilities, long time partners of our company.

What are the major challenges that your business must address in 2015?  in 2020?

A first challenge is to convince consumers to commit to energy management, with the support of their Utilities.

A second challenge is to convince Utilities of the benefits to go over the meter to increase efficiency and also customer satisfaction.

What are the major barriers impacting consumer adoption of energy related products and services?

  • The relatively low financial impact of energy efficiency for a household.
  • The multiplicity of offers and low visibility on their capacity to support expansion of applications into an integrated home solution.

What are the biggest opportunities for the smart home industry to work with the electricity industry?

A great opportunity is to develop solutions in the home that help the electricity industry achieve important objectives of efficiency—peak demand management, energy savings and increase consumer satisfaction.

Also the opportunity for the smart home industry to help the electricity industry manage the challenges of distributed electrical related assets—solar systems, storage, electric vehicles—for the mutual benefits of consumers and Utilities.

What impact do smart products and smart home services have on consumer adoption of energy solutions?

The development of smart home products and services also helps promote energy related solutions, either as stand-alone applications, in particular with the development of smart connected thermostats, or part of integrated solutions, i.e. energy monitoring systems.

Xavier Datin will be speaking on the panel “Utility Perspectives: Market Impact of New Business Models” at 9:00 AM during Smart Energy Summit in Austin, TX, February 17, 2015.
