Today’s Consumers Expect Proactive Notifications from All of Their Service Providers: Insights from Tendril

Marie Bahl McKenna, SVP of Sales & Marketing at Tendril, answers industry questions prior to speaking at Smart Energy Summit in February:

What are the major barriers impacting consumer adoption of energy related products and services?

Right now, a significant challenge is that most consumers don't care or are not aware enough of the different energy services available to them. As an industry, we need to do a better job informing consumers of their various options and the related ROI. Furthermore, rather than using mass information campaigns, utilities can and should use targeted segmentation strategies and personalized information to make consumers aware of energy-related products and services that are of utmost interest to them.

What impact do smart products and smart home services have on consumer adoption of energy solutions?

Today’s consumers expect proactive notifications from all of their service providers. Similar to when a cell phone carrier notifies a customer of a data overage, the onus shouldn’t be on the consumer to seek out and find important and timely information that directly impacts them. The same holds true for energy providers and the related products that consumers use to manage their home’s energy use. Consumers now expect a set and forget paradigm where their smart energy devices are automatically doing the right thing without them having to intervene and react on a regular basis.

Marie Bahl McKenna will be speaking on the panel “Utility Perspectives: Market Impact of New Business Models” at 9:00 AM during Smart Energy Summit in Austin, TX, February 17, 2015. Other panel speakers include representatives from Austin Energy, Schneider Electric, Simple Energy, and the U.S. Department of Energy.
