The TV Will Remain Dominant

While some in the industry are speculating on the future decline of the television as the leading video consumption platform, Parks Associates’ data suggests that the TV will remain dominant for some time. Several studies, including our own, have shown significant increases in video consumption on tablets over the past year. In fact, video viewing on all connected platforms is increasing. Consumers are now watching more video due to easier accessibility of content on multiple devices.

Parks Associates data from Q1 2012 Parks Associates Chart: Changes in Video Consumptionshows that TV broadcasts remain as the preferred choice for video viewing. Among US broadband households, 59% of respondents stated that television broadcasts or recordings of those broadcasts via DVR are their first choice among content sources.

Parks Associates also measured the change in video consumption across devices over a 12 month period and found that whereas 50% of respondents reported increases in the time they spent watching video on tablets over the period, video viewing on the television set remains largely the same.

So, before we crown a new “king” of video platforms, know that the current king will still be around for some time.
