Two-thirds of U.S. consumers with broadband are not very familiar with smart home services or products or where to buy them, according to a new survey.

That will likely change quickly in coming years, according to the white paper from Consumer Electronics Association and Parks Associates. But for now, it’s not just an open market, but also a nebulous one.

However, the dealer market is still responsible for more than half of all sales in the U.S., according to Tom Kerber, director of research at Parks Associates. He said that in the premium tier of the dealer market, smart thermostats make up about 10 percent to 20 percent of the market, so there is still significant space for penetration in that sector, and also in the mid-tier market. Nest is not a major player in the dealer market, according to Parks Associates' research.

Southern Co.'s smart meter deployments as of May include its subsidiaries Georgia Power, which has deployed 750,000 meters out of a planned 2.16 million, and Alabama Power with 448,000 meters deployed out of a planned 1.2 million meters, according to research firm Parks Associates (see 8.3M Smart Meters and Counting in U.S.).
