CES Sells Consumers on the Effortlessly Automated Smart Home

The rush to get connected devices to market, and into ecosystems that matter, is just heating up in 2015. CES is the kickoff point, but the space will only grow more convoluted and busier throughout the year. What Is a Smart Home? Most People Don’t Know

Two-thirds of U.S. consumers with broadband are not very familiar with smart home services or products or where to buy them, according to a new survey.

Honeywell’s New Smart Thermostat Goes Back to Its Round Design Roots

However, the dealer market is still responsible for more than half of all sales in the U.S., according to Tom Kerber, director of research at Parks Associates. He said that in the premium tier of the dealer market, smart thermostats make up about 10 percent to 20 percent of the market, so there is still significant space for penetration in that sector, and also in the mid-tier market. Southern company Seeks $326M in Smart Grid Stimulus

Southern Co.'s smart meter deployments as of May include its subsidiaries Georgia Power, which has deployed 750,000 meters out of a planned 2.16 million, and Alabama Power with 448,000 meters deployed out of a planned 1.2 million meters, according to research firm Parks Associates (see 8.3M Smart Meters and Counting in U.S.).

DOE Hands Out $47M for Smart Grid Demos

Most of the announced applications are seeking funding for extending utilities' ongoing smart meter deployments. Electric and gas meters that can send and receive data and control commands from utilities are being deployed by the tens of millions around the world, about 8.3 million in the United States as of May, according to a recent report from Parks Associates

8.3M Smart Meters and Counting in U.S.

Research firm Parks Associates says 8.3 million smart electric meters have been installed at U.S. residences to date – a little more than 6 percent of the total, up from about 4.7 at the end of last year.

That's according to a new report from research firm Parks Associates released this week, which counted up smart meter penetration across a range of U.S. utilities.
