Facebook: No VOD Attraction

More than 50% of Facebook users with broadband connectivity said they would not pay $1.99 to watch a recently released movie on a social networking website, according to a Q3 2011 survey of 500 broadband households conducted by Parks Associates. About 12% said they would pay the fee for a 48-hour window.

Consumer Awareness of ‘TV Everywhere’ Lagging

Just 20% of pay-TV subscribers were aware of TV Everywhere provided by their operator in the first quarter of 2012, with 53% of those subscribers using the service at least once a month, according to data presented in a June 21 webinar by Parks Associates.

TV Everywhere is a platform designed to attract and retain pay-TV subscribers in an era of competing (and less expensive) over-the-top alternatives such as Netflix, Hulu, Google Plus and Amazon Prime.

Report: Netflix Undermining Transactional VOD, Pay TV

Netflix’s all-you-can-watch subscription streaming is rated a superior service and better value than pay-TV channels and transactional video-on-demand rentals, according to a new report from Parks Associates.

Dallas-based Parks found that 16% of U.S. broadband homes consider using an SVOD service such as Netflix (or Hulu Plus) when watching movies on VOD. Another 17% of respondents check out Netflix before watching programming on premium channels such as HBO and Showtime.

Report: Industry Needs to Lower 3DTV Expectations

Fifty-two percent of The Avengers’ record opening weekend box office tally came from higher-priced 3D tickets (including Imax), according to Walt Disney Studios. However, a new Parks Associates report says consumer interest in 3DTV will remain at niche status.

25% of Video Watching Occurs Away From the TV

Dallas-based Parks Associates said the average broadband user watches 36 minutes of video on a tablet each week, with another 25% of video consumption occurring on a mobile phone.

“One-third of U.S. broadband households streamed a TV show in the past 30 days, and these consumer viewing habits are raising expectations for new service offerings,” said Brett Sappington, director of research with Parks Associates.

31% of Broadband Homes Use Web to Watch TV, Movies

Dallas-based Parks Associates estimates that 14 million media players will sell in 2012, underscoring increased consumer demand for access to video entertainment via non-traditional sources such as the Internet.
