TelcoTV: U.S. IPTV set for double-digit growth as cable stalls

New research from Parks Associates to be unveiled at teh upcoming TelcoTV event shows that U.S. telcos are successfully leveraging their fiber-based broadband offerings and IPTV to woo pay-TV subscribers away from cable and satellite. The research firm predicts that number of U.S. IPTV subscribers will rise from 8.8 million in 2011 to 18.6 million in 2017.

Two-thirds of pay-TV subs have access to multiscreen services

Western European multiscreen operator-provided growth has led to an 80% increase in coverage and given 66% of pay-TV subscribers in the region access to these services.

Rocketing residential router and gateway market to reach 120 million units by 2017

New research from Parks Associates has revealed that broadband providers worldwide will deploy 39 million high-end, feature-rich residential gateways in 2012, with over 20 million in Western Europe alone.

By 2017 this number will rise to 120 million residential gateways and routers worldwide, up from 75 million this year.

Netflix threatens cable, satellite with cost and flexibility

Despite a lower quality of user experience than broadcast options, Netflix rates higher in customer satisfaction than traditional television because of the flexibility it offers, and because the price is right at $9.99 per month.

That's according to a new study from Parks Associates, which says the results raise the spectre of cord-cutting.

Three-quarters of connected TV users engage with online TV

In fact, new research from Parks Associates has revealed that 75% of those with internet-connected smart TVS regularly watch online video. Moreover, Parks also found that the percentage of US smart-TV owners who used their connected device to watch online video increased by over 30% in six months. Netflix gnaws away at pay-TV, Premium Channel VOD revenues

The increasing influences of OTT in the decision processes of pay-TV consumers, says the Choosing Content: Viewing Video report from Parks Associates, raises the possibility of Watch Instantly cannibalising pay-TV offerings. The analyst found that when watching films on VOD that 16% of US broadband consumers considered using an online subscription service as an alternative and 17% of those watching TV programs on a permium channel like HBO consider using Netflix instead.

Pay-TV services in Brazil are hot, hot, hot

Parks Associates' latest global research finds that overall, Brazil is outpacing Russia, China, and India in its growth rate for pay-TV subscriptions. During 2011, pay-TV service subscriptions in Brazil increased by almost a third (30%), while and broadband service subscriptions grew by 20%, Parks has revealed.
