Smart TVs ‘change viewer perception of ads’

The number of US households with a smart TV will reach 87 million by 2016, according to research from Parks Associates, which has released a new white-paper, commissioned by Rovi, examining new opportunities in advertising based on the growing adoption and usage of connected TV platforms in the US and Western Europe.

Europeans prefer PC video

Research from analyst firm Parks Associates analysing broadband and pay-TV services, business models, and consumer preferences indicates that broadband penetration is above 70 per cent in several Western European countries, and up to 30 per cent of the broadband population in some countries prefer PCs over TVs for watching video, with a strong corresponding preference for free online video sources. US connected home revenues will reach $500m in 2012

75% of US connected TV owners watch online

Research from Parks Associates finds the percentages of US smart TV owners who use their Internet-connected device to watch online video increased by over 30 per cent in six months.

Study: Netflix does cannibalise pay VoD

Low cost and viewing flexibility give Netflix an advantage over pay-TV VoD and premium broadcast TV, according to a study from Parks Associates. ‘Choosing Content: Viewing Video’ found Netflix Watch Instantly rates higher in customer satisfaction than premium broadcast TV because of these factors. Netflix also topped pay-TV VoD in terms of cost.

Women dominate connected TV use

“Women are frequently the product buyers – and once she owns a CE product, she becomes a heavy user, most particularly for devices that allow sharing and uploading content and downloading TV programs,” said Tricia Parks, CEO, Parks Associates. “CE manufacturers are picking up on this changed buyer, offering their products, particularly their mobile ones, in more colors and styles with more personalized accessories.”

Viewers OK with personalised ads

Parks Associates reports consumer comfort with personalised advertisements is increasing, with 45 per cent of US broadband households comfortable seeing ads based on their TV-viewing habits and product/service preferences.

Europeans prefer recorded TV
