More than 25% of Video Viewing is Off the TV; Ad Predictions for 2012

More than 25% of all video viewing in broadband homes in the U.S. is taking place on venues besides the TV, according to fresh data from research firm, Parks Associates. That includes PCs, smartphones and tablets, and that’s also a weekly figure, underscoring that off-TV viewing is becoming a regular behavior for consumers. What’s more, about one-third of homes said they’d streamed a TV show in the past 30 days.

TV Now Viewed Cross-Platform

Dallas-based Parks Associates says more than 25% of all video viewing in U.S. broadband homes now occurs on platforms other than the television, such as PCs, smartphones and tablets.

In addition, in over one-third of U.S. homes with broadband access, a TV shows has been streamed over the last 30 days. Parks Associates’ survey said the average broadband user watches 36 minutes of video on a tablet.

Siri Users Embrace TV Voice Recognition

A large percentage of Apple iPhone 4S users appreciate the Siri voice-recognition functionality and a notable chunk would like the opportunity to issue similar directives for their TVs, according to Parks Associates.

More than 70% of U.S. 4S users are “very satisfied” or “satisfied” with Siri, while 37% of them “want to have a similar voice-command interface for their TV set.” There are suggestions that Siri may be part of a new Apple TV.

Women Purchase More CE Products, Watch More TV Online Than Men

The last few days have yielded some eye-popping online video stats from research firms and companies with skin in the game. For starters, researcher Parks Associates has found in its latest studies that women are more ravenous consumers of online TV shows than men. According to research from Parks Associates, women are 73% more likely than men to have watched a full-length TV show online over the past 30 days.

Consumers Prefer Connected TV Over 3D

Despite all of the options available to get one’s visual entertainment, television still is one of the most popular devices out there. According to new consumer research from Parks Associates, 20% of all U.S. households with broadband intend to purchase a new flat-panel television by the end of the year.

Behavioral Targeting On Rise Regardless Of Pushback

Online behavioral advertising revenue in the U.S. will reach $4.9 billion by December 2011, and grow at a 9.6% compounded annual growth rate to reach $7.1 billion by 2015, according to Parks Associates.

The growth of targeting is being fueled by the adoption of broadband Internet access and mobile smartphones. The analyst firm estimates 68% of all U.S. households will have broadband by the end of this year, increasing to 80.4 million users by 2015.

Down Grade: Broadband Adoption Linked To TV Cord Cutting

Dallas-based researcher Parks Associates says 13% of consumers who have broadband connections have made cutbacks within the last 12 months -- with another 9% to come. The study says this includes some 3.9 million people who regularly watch Internet video.
