Seventh of US broadband homes to buy streaming players in H1 2016

Some 14% of US broadband households plan to buy a streaming media player by the middle of 2016, according to Parks Associates.

The research firm claims that as of the third quarter of 2015, 31% of US broadband households owned a streaming media player, up from 27% at the beginning of the year.

Streaming media device sales to reach 86 million

Global annual sales of streaming media devices will increase from 30 million units in 2013 to 86 million units in 2019, according to Parks Associates.

The research firm said that last year 13% of US broadband households purchased a streaming media device, boosting adoption to nearly 30%. These included boxes and streaming sticks form companies like Roku, Apple Google and Amazon.

Smart TVs in 45% of Western European web homes

Ultra HD TV sales to top 330 million by end of 2019

Global Ultra High Definition 4K TV sales will top 330 million by the end of 2019, according to Parks Associates.

The research firm’s Connected CE: Trends and Innovation report claims that sales of Ultra HD sets will climb from just two million units in 2013.

Among US broadband households that plan to buy a flat-panel TV in 2015, some 56% said they think 4K picture quality is an important feature, according to the research.

OTT password-sharing to cost industry US$500 million

Password-sharing for over-the-top (OTT) video services like Netflix will cost the content industry US$500 million (€450 million) in 2015, according to Parks Associates.

The research firm’s ‘Cost of Piracy’ report claims that 6% of US broadband homes use an OTT video service that is paid for by a person living outside of the household.
