More than a third of US broadband homes now have smart TVs

In research presented at the CE Week conference in New York this week, Parks said that 34% of US broadband homes now have a smart TV and that more than 70% of smart TV owners have connected the device to the internet.

“Also, nearly two-thirds of people shopping for a flat-panel TV this year plan to buy a smart TV. These trends show the smart TV has a significant role in the connected home and is a key device to extend new services and experiences to consumers,” said Parks.

Google Chromecast use ‘waning’, says Parks Associates

The adoption of streaming media players has increased to nearly 20% of US broadband homes, but usage of Google Chromecast devices “appears to be declining,” according to new research by Parks Associates.

The study said that Chromecast ownership is steady at around 6% of US broadband households, but monthly usage rates in the first quarter of 2014 were slightly lower than in the last two quarters of 2013.

Smart TVs to be in 35% of US homes by end of the year

Roughly 42 million US households will have a smart TV by the end of 2014, accounting for 35% of the country’s 119 million TV households, according to Parks Associates.

The research, presented at the IAB Advanced TV Town Hall event in New York yesterday, claims that by 2018, 70% of all US TV households will have a smart TV.

Roku owners use OTT services more than Apple TV users, says Parks

More Roku owners than Apple TV owners use an over-the-top (OTT) video service, according to consumer research by Parks Associates, presented at the NAB Show in Las Vegas.

Parks’ Streaming CE and Content Purchasing Habits report claims that 86% of Roku owners use a subscription OTT service compared to 77% of Apple TV owners.

US broadband users watch 1.7 hours of mobile video per week

Broadband users in the US watch an average 1.7 hours of video on their mobile phones each week, with 29% watching content in this way monthly, according to research firm Parks Associates.

The new stats, released to coincide with Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, claim that the number of people in North America who watch mobile video and TV shows on mobile devices at least weekly will increase to 173 million by 2017.

Mobile viewing to drive in-app ad revenues

Roughly 60% of smartphone and tablet users watch between one and five hours of TV or video on these mobile platforms each week, according to Parks Associates.

The US research firm said that this video consumption will help drive in-app ad revenues to more than US$5.6 billion by 2017, with 44% of tablet owners and 32% of smartphone claiming to have increased viewing on these platforms in the past year.

US pay TV households to pass 103 million this year

More than 103 million US households will subscribe to pay TV services by the end of 2014, according to research by Parks Associates.

The new research, announced at CES in Las Vegas, claims that two-thirds of pay-TV subscribers expressed interest in features they currently do not have, with remote access to DVR content proving most popular among pay-TV households that can’t already access that service.

Two fifths of Chromecast users stream Netflix daily, new study finds

Among users of Google’s new Chromecast internet TV dongle, 43% were found to stream Netflix on a daily basis with 34% streaming Hulu every day, according to a new study by Parks Associates.

The research firm said that the findings highlighted the challenges of licensing content in the digital world and “underscores the desire by consumers to watch content on their preferred screen.”
