Monetising OTT: The Key Factors

Speaking in a presentation at Broadband World Forum entitled Making money in the new world of video, Brett Sappington, he said that there had been a rush to OTT in the last few years. In the US, for instance, there were 29 established and five new services launched in 2011. By 2015 those figures had risen to 65 and 33 respectively and now there are over 120 OTT services in the US, plus a further 30-40 in Canada.

35% Of US Broadband Homes Watch User-Generated Video

According to Parks Associates, three-fourths of US broadband households access this content at least once per month.

The research comes from one of three recently released research deliverables by Parks Associates that examine consumer demand for personalized services, entertainment and app strategies, and the impact of OTT and user-generated content on video production and distribution.

OTT Subscriptions Up 12% In US Since 2014

Netflix, WWE Network, and Hulu have the highest Net Promoter Scores among major OTT video services in the US, according to Parks Associates.

The international research firm notes that adoption of OTT video subscriptions has increased by 12% since Q3 2014, with the number of available services and consumer awareness both increasing, despite password sharing growing by approximately 8% over that same time.

Parks Associates new report Tracking Eyeballs: Video Analytics and Measurement warns that consumers might increasingly use ad-blocking solutions while streaming video if the digital advertising methods disrupt their viewing experience.

Parks Associates’ digital media analysts advise service providers and media companies that the best defense against these ad blockers is to develop digital advertising models that are integrated and non-disruptive to the viewing experience.

23% Of US Millennials Are OTT-Only

23% of Millennial heads of household are OTT-only households, higher than the national average of 15% among all US broadband households, according to Parks Associates.

The firm’s analysts also note that 61% of Millennials subscribe to both pay-TV and OTT services, also higher than the national average of 52%.
