Parks: Third Of UK Broadband Households Are OTT Subscribers

Parks Associates says 33% of U.K. broadband households subscribed to an OTT video service as of 3Q 2015. The same study shows that only 15% of U.K. households with pay-TV subscribe to premium movie channels.

Despite content concerns, Europeans Want 4k

Among these future buyers, 54% are willing to purchase a 4k TV with the expectation that more content will be available soon, according to Parks Associates.

“European broadcasters like BBC and France Télévisions have been innovative in incorporating digital services to reach the public, so a spike in 4k set ownership could drive broadcasters to invest in new 4k media technologies,” said Glenn Hower, research analyst, Parks Associates.

14% of US homes plan to buy streaming media player

14% of US broadband households plan to buy a streaming media player by midyear 2016 and that, as of the third quarter of 2015, 31% of US broadband households currently own a streaming media player, up from 27% at the beginning of the year.

“Streaming media players will be a popular gift this holiday season, especially with more competitive pricing in the market and the expansion of new OTT services” said Barbara Kraus, director of research, Parks Associates.

Nearly 20% of UK broadband homes use Netflix

18% of UK broadband households have used paid-service Netflix in the past 30 days, according to Parks Research.

This compares with 20% who used the free iTV Player and 33% who used the free iPlayer to stream video programming. Overall 58% of UK broadband households used a video streaming service or player within the past 30 days.

In Europe, 57% own at least one connected CE device

Approximately 9% of Western European broadband households own at least one smart home device and 57% own at least one internet-connected CE device, according to Parks Associates.

Parks Associates announced results for its consumer research project Connected Consumer in Europe, which surveyed broadband households in the UK, Germany, Spain, and France to track adoption and future purchase plans of IoT, smart home, and connected entertainment solutions.
