Parks Associates Senior Director of Research Brett Sappington pointed out that the services premium tier offers up to four concurrent streams and access to Ultra HD viewing, while the basic option only allows viewing on one screen and SD quality.
“Consumers value access to multiple streams, particularly for popular services, making a premium tier with multiple streams a moneymaker for OTT video services,” Sappington said in comments emailed to CED.
As the percentage of U.S. households that own streaming media players climbed to nearly 40 percent at the beginning of 2018, Roku managed to maintain its lead in market share while Amazon is gaining ground, according to new research from Parks Associates.

Parks Associates estimates that the pay-TV industry will lose $9.9 billion in revenue by 2021 from TV multiscreen password sharing, up from $3.5 billion this year. This is an important loss particularly as traditional TV providers are feeling the effects of cord-cutting, with linear video services losing about 3 million subscribers so far this year.

U.S. households with existing broadband service will purchase nearly 55 million smart home devices in 2020 if current trends continue, according to a report from Parks Associates.
The report found that although many smart home devices are still in the early adoption stage, the number of U.S. households installing smart thermostats, lights, locks, or networked cameras climbed from 12 percent earlier in the year to 15 percent.
