‘Smart home’ technology goes mainstream
Less than 5 percent of U.S. households, or about 5.8 million homes, had some form of remote monitoring and control system in place at the end of 2011, according to Parks Associates, a market research firm in Dallas. By 2014 that is expected to grow to 9.3 percent.
Companies see home automation as a long-term prospect for new revenue streams, but many consumers don’t yet know the technology exists, said Tricia Parks, CEO of Parks Associates. It is up to the industry to educate consumers, she said. “I believe the competition will be stiff. A new market means you and I can’t say who will win yet. There is an opportunity here for some companies to be game-changers.”
